DWP Calls Again for Rate Hike, but Only for 1 Year
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Board of Commissioners on Friday reaffirmed its call for a 3.6% rate increase but also recommended a “sunset” provision that would cause the rate hike to expire in one year.
The addition of the expiration clause, suggested by City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, appeared to set the stage for possible approval when the council considers it again next week.
The council had defeated the rate proposal this week. But when told that the DWP faced hundreds of layoffs without the rate hike, the council voted 10 to 4 to take another look. By this fall, the council has asked DWP to come up with a plan to restructure water rates.
