Magic’s No. 32 to Be Retired on Feb. 16

The Lakers announced Monday they will retire Magic Johnson’s No. 32 at their Feb. 16 game at the Forum against the Boston Celtics.

The game was already scheduled to be nationally televised.

Holding it with the Celtics in town will enable Larry Bird to take part. Bird’s Indiana State team met Johnson’s Michigan State team in the 1979 NCAA finals, and their pro teams met in three NBA finals. They went from being bitter rivals to good friends.

The Lakers have previously retired four numbers: Jerry West’s No. 44, Elgin Baylor’s 22, Wilt Chamberlain’s 13 and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 33.
