BAGHDAD : A Revisionist War
Saddam Hussein’s regime plans to put a positive spin on a disastrous defeat as Iraq marks the first anniversary of the Persian Gulf War, in which tens of thousands of Iraqis were killed.
It starts Friday with post-midnight praises to Allah broadcast from Baghdad’s mosques and a daylong Islamic conference. For the next 42 days--the length of the war--there will be anti-American demonstrations, recitals of martial poetry and music, and the unveiling of murals extolling Iraqi resistance, interpreted as victory, in the Mother of All Battles.
Westerners working in Baghdad say Hussein has successfully steered public anger over poor living conditions toward the United States and its allies for maintaining an economic embargo.
