Smoking Ban in All County Buildings Passes 1st Vote

Smoking would be banned inside all 1,800 Los Angeles County buildings under an ordinance given tentative approval by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

The ordinance, which will come before the board for a final vote next Tuesday, was approved 3 to 2 with Mike Antonovich, Deane Dana and Kenneth Hahn supporting it and Ed Edelman and Gloria Molina dissenting.

“I think this is overkill,” said Molina, a former smoker. Currently, smoking is allowed in designated areas of county buildings, such as private offices. Dana said he welcomed a prohibition on smoking in county vehicles. “We had a former supervisor who smoked so much that you can’t use his car because it (smells) so bad.”

“So now we’re banning smells?” Molina said.

The ordinance says, “Reasonable effort shall be made to provide smokers a place to smoke in areas open to the sky or otherwise located outside county facilities.”
