Torres Won’t Run in New Congressional District

Share

Despite the urgings of others, state Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) said Wednesday that he will not run for an East Side congressional seat created under a reapportionment plan created by the state Supreme Court.

The decision by Torres, 45, avoids a potentially divisive fight with Assemblywoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles), who has declared her candidacy for the newly created 33rd Congressional District. The state lawmaker lost a bruising campaign last year to Gloria Molina for a seat on the county Board of Supervisors that split loyalties among Latino supporters.

“I could have run but I felt it was important to stay because there is unfinished business,” said Torres, who added that he wants to remain close to his son Joaquin, 16, and daughter Danielle, 10.
