More than 2,000 immigrants from 89 countries were sworn in as citizens Wednesday in the year’s first naturalization ceremonies in the Los Angeles area.

The two ceremonies, hosted by the city of Carson, were the first such ceremonies ever to be held in the South Bay and the largest administrative naturalization ceremonies ever conducted in the Los Angeles area, according to federal immigration officials.

Robert Moschorak, Los Angeles district director of the U.S Immigration and Naturalization Service, administered the oath to the new citizens. The Immigration Act of 1990 gave the INS the authority to administer the oath in naturalization ceremonies, he added. Last year, more than 50,000 people in Los Angeles were sworn in as citizens.
