Wachs Asks Council to Back Gay Rights Initiative

Share

Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs on Wednesday introduced a motion asking his colleagues to endorse a proposed statewide ballot initiative that would protect gays and lesbians from job discrimination.

The initiative has already been endorsed by the state Democratic Party and by newly elected San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan. Wachs hopes that the motion, which is expected to come before the council within two weeks, will help its sponsors gather support in Southern California.

“It is in the city’s interest and the state’s interest to have a climate where people can achieve according to their ability and not be discriminated against based upon sexual orientation or any other arbitrary form of discrimination,” Wachs said.
