State highway officials approved $15.7 million Thursday for widening California 118 in Saticoy and building a new bridge over the Santa Clara River.

Bids could be solicited as early as April and construction finished by the spring of 1995, according to the state Department of Transportation.

As part of the project approved by the California Transportation Commission, the highway will be widened from two to four lanes at its intersection with the Santa Paula Freeway and for seven-tenths of a mile west of Vineyard Avenue.

Plans also call for a modern, four-lane bridge over the river.

The existing bridge has exposed footings and is vulnerable to damage during storms, officials said.

Another project to widen and realign the highway between Los Angeles Avenue and Wells Road is still being designed and should be ready to go to bid within a year, state Transportation Commission officials said.

About 32,000 motorists use the highway each day, frequently creating congestion on the narrow roadway. Highway officials predict that more than 48,000 cars will use the highway daily by 2010.

County Supervisor Susan K. Lacey, who represents the area where the improvement is planned, said she is “absolutely delighted that this project is going to commence. It’s a very important project for Ventura County.”
