Southland Communications Names New Head: Southland Communications Inc., a Santa Ana paging services company that does business as National Paging, said Friday that it has appointed Philip J. Scalzo as chairman and president, replacing company founder Ahmad N. Bayaa. Scalzo was previously general manager of the western sales region of Hewlett-Packard Co., a Palo Alto electronics company. Bayaa was sued in federal court in New York by the Securities and Exchange Commission in May, 1990, for allegedly conspiring to manipulate his company’s stock price. Southland’s stock price jumped from $8.75 a share to $16.75 during several weeks until the SEC halted trading in April, 1990. The status of the suit against Bayaa could not be determined late Friday. Scalzo and Bayaa could not be reached for comment.
