STYLE : LOOKS : No Sweat

Serious exercisers may frown on wearing makeup during workouts, but when working out in public, most women want a little help for their skin, eyes and lips.

The trick, of course, is to look healthy, not glamorous. For eyes, makeup artist Nadia Taricco recommends a subtle, smoky effect created with matte powders in charcoal gray, brown or black. The skin on the brow bone should remain bare, and lashes should get a light application of waterproof mascara. For lips, she suggests using a rust-brown pencil in place of lipstick to keep smearing to a minimum. “The look is natural because all the makeup has a matte finish,” says Taricco, who prefers M.A.C. pencils and Swimmer’s Mascara by Clinique.

When it comes to foundation, however, a natural look is harder to achieve “because sweating makes it run and clump,” Taricco laments. Two good possibilities are Prescriptives’ new All Skins line, which is light and sheer, and Clinique’s Workout Makeup, which is oil-based and formulated not to clog pores or change consistency when the skin heats up. Clinique also claims that the base, with an SPF of 6, will stay put in the pool.
