King: A Filmed Record ... Montgomery to Memphis (KCET Monday at 1 p.m.). Directors Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Sidney Lumet made this outstanding 1970 documentary on the life and death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Wanda (Bravo Monday at 5 p.m.; Tuesday at 1 a.m.). In Barbara Loden’s extraordinary 1971 film, Loden stars as the woebegone girlfriend of a two-bit crook (Michael Higgins). The result is a pair of fully realized portraits of losers, drawn in gritty ultra-realistic style and filled out with humor and despair.
The Josephine Baker Story (HBO Monday at 8 p.m.). Never mind that Hollywood has neglected the legendary entertainer, for last year HBO gave “La Bakair”--the rage of 1920s Paris, French Resistance heroine and civil rights activist--the royal treatment she so richly deserves. Highlighted by a knockout performance by the perfectly cast Lynn Whitfield.
Something Wild (TMC Tuesday at noon). Jonathan Demme’s 1986 film is one of his best, a romantic comedy-adventure that shows off Demme’s eye for the dark cloud behind every silver lining. Jeff Daniels is a nice yuppie lassoed by free-spirited Melanie Griffith.
