First Lady’s Speech

Barbara Bush was a vision of classical elegance as she addressed the media. Her message to the world was reassuring and dignified after her husband fainted in Japan (Jan. 9).

Before she knew that her husband was out of danger, she stepped forward, with grace and humor, to prevent worldwide panic while her own emotions must have been in turmoil. How natural it would have been for her to display her true emotions. Certainly, she would have captured the front pages of every newspaper.

My sister feminists were not always flattering to Barbara Bush. She was criticized for sacrificing a chance for personal success to play second string to her husband. Always behind him, she has never attempted to usurp his role or steal his limelight as previous First Ladies have done. Her choice to be the appendage of her husband may be the subject of feminists’ debates. However, the dignity and elegance with which she plays her role are not.
