OXNARD : School Bond Issue to Be Discussed

Share

Parents, community members and staff of the Oxnard Union High School District will meet Tuesday to discuss a $45-million bond measure that will be on the city’s April 14 ballot.

Under the measure, which needs a two-thirds majority to pass, Oxnard homeowners would be taxed $7.75 per $100,000 of the assessed value of their homes each year for 25 years, district business manager Bob Brown said.

The money would be used to build the city’s seventh high school and to ease overcrowding at the other high schools. About 50 portable buildings are in use on the campuses of Channel Islands, Oxnard and Hueneme high schools to accommodate an overflow of students in the 11,000-student district.

District officials had hoped to get state funding to build the 2,250-student school, which is planned for a 50-acre site east of Oxnard Boulevard and south of Gonzales Road. The school was scheduled to open in September, 1993.

However, changes in state school funding and a $1-billion funding backlog for new schools have drastically decreased the district’s chances for receiving state money, officials said.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the district board room at 309 S. K St. in Oxnard.
