The deputy superintendent of San Diego city schools is one of the top 10 contenders listed by a consultant for the post of San Francisco schools superintendent.

Bertha Pendleton, second-in-command in San Diego, was contacted about her interest by Pasadena consultant Ira Krinsky, a specialist in searches for urban superintendents.

Pendleton was in Washington Monday, but her boss, San Diego schools chief Tom Payzant, said Pendleton told him several weeks ago that she was considering Krinsky’s request to submit her name. Pendleton has spent much of her career in San Diego as a teacher, principal and central office administrator before becoming Payzant’s deputy in 1985.

The San Francisco board is under no obligation to accept any of the names submitted by the consultant. Payzant said that Pendleton had hoped to keep her information about her interest private until Bay Area trustees decided who, if any among the 10 names, to interview in detail about the position.
