Recession and U.S. Decline

Re “The Recession Is Not Just Economic,” Commentary, Jan. 8:

Robert N. Bellah and Chris Adams have made a refreshing contribution to public sanity in their column. They point out the overlooked obvious that the turnaround in America’s devolution must start with “ . . . genuine discussions about where we have been, where we are and where we want to go.”

Yes, we are in a “social, cultural and political recession”--as well as an economic one. Recovery from the economic one will improve our spirits and material well-being but will not contribute to a recovery from our moral “depression.” Only clear public thinking in a great debate of free citizens can jar us out of the lethargic malaise which we as a nation have regressed into.

Bravo to UC Berkeley for sponsoring the conference on “The Good Society: Sources of Public Philosophy in America.” Concerned citizens should take heart that something useful can be done and join in a public dialogue.
