Dan Quayle

It’s hard to believe such reckless confidence, but Tom Bethell (“Once in Office, the Presidential Aura Appears,” Column Right, Jan. 9) really did say that Vice President Dan Quayle, as a replacement President, “would inadvertently perform a useful service by undermining the mystique of the heroic presidency”! Translated, that means “on-the-job-training” is OK for a callow, smirking “gofer” in an elitist, forget-the-economy Administration.
Perhaps the time has come for another haberdasher President seriously minding the store.
