Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov edged defending champions Natasha Mishkutienok and Artur Dmitriev for the lead in the pairs competition at the European Figure Skating Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The couples, both from St. Petersburg, Russia, performed for the Commonwealth of Independent States, a name chosen after last-minute consultations with international skating authorities.
