Next Computer to Broaden Software Availability: Next Computer Inc., the innovative but awkwardly positioned computer company run by Apple co-founder Steven P. Jobs, announced that it will make its widely praised software operating system available on high-end IBM-compatible personal computers. The move is aimed at persuading third-party software companies to write more programs that work with the operating system, which controls the basic functions of the machine. It also provides another option for customers who either own PCs that contain Intel’s 486 microprocessor or are reluctant to buy Next’s non-standard hardware. Jobs also said that privately held Next had sales of $127 million in 1991, a solid gain over the $28 million registered in 1990 but short of the $200 million that Jobs had hoped for.
