San Gabriel : Child-Care Plan Rejected

Share

The City Council rejected a proposal to spend $80,000 for a portable building to house a child-care center at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School.

The motion to take the money from park funds, offered by Councilman John Tapp, died without a second even though school officials had rushed to complete an application for federal aid to run the proposed program--if the city provided the housing.

Councilman Sabino Cici said it was the wrong time for new programs because the city’s deficit last year forced a cut in police and fire positions to keep existing after-school recreational activities.

Tapp, who said he thought council members liked the idea when he pitched it earlier this month, apologized to school officials for urging them to apply for the $375,000 federal grant by Wednesday’s deadline.
