PLATFORM : Destroying a City

The Meridian route (which would bisect the city along Meridian Avenue) would be destructive to South Pasadena, which is only 3.4 square miles.

The Pasadena Freeway (already) goes through the city; It does not go through Pasadena at all. The Pasadena Freeway is 100 feet wide. The proposed Long Beach Freeway extension is 400 feet wide. They would take so much of the homes and the tax base of the city of South Pasadena that we could not survive financially or psychologically as a separate incorporated city. With the kind of destruction that would result, we would go bankrupt during the construction period.

The cost of this 6-mile gap will exceed $1 billion! Well, they started out saying $500 million, but they are admitting now that, yes, that could be so. Well over $1 billion would build a tremendous number of miles of monorail that could benefit the whole San Gabriel Valley.
