Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Harkin Gives Clinton Angry Union Crowd
Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton ran into a hostile group of Machinists Union leaders who had just been heated up by Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, his rival for the Democratic nomination for President. Harkin showed a headline proclaiming Clinton’s support for the free trade agreement with Mexico, drawing opposition to Clinton from the crowd of about 100. Clinton then insisted that free trade would be good for American workers. But one union official angrily recited a list of industries devastated by foreign competition and demanded to know if Clinton would wait “to turn around on this issue until we’ve got nothing left.”
