An Oxnard man, suspected of committing numerous felonies in at least three cities including Ventura, was arrested after a short, high-speed car chase through residential streets, Oxnard police said Wednesday.

John David Barnett, 27, was being held in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, officials said.

In addition to being sought on suspicion of attempted murder in the San Jose and Los Angeles metropolitan areas, Barnett is suspected of committing several other felonies in Ventura, including driving a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, auto theft and robbery.

Oxnard police gave this account of events leading to Barnett’s arrest:

About 1:15 p.m., Officer Braxton Tatum received a call from an unidentified individual who complained about a car racing on Cuesta del Mar Drive.

After a Department of Motor Vehicles check based on a description provided by the caller, police identified the car as stolen from the Los Angeles area on Tuesday. Tatum arrived on the scene and was approached by an individual who was near the car, but the man ran away, police said.

Undercover officers later saw a man come out of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Cuesta del Mar Drive and speed off in the stolen car. A high-speed chase through residential streets ended when the car crashed into a curb at Bard and F streets, police said.

Officers chased Barnett on foot through several back yards in the area before arresting him about 3:30 p.m.
