Hospital Consultant Named Administrator

Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center, scene of a turbulent dispute over leadership last year, has hired a new administrator, choosing an executive from the health care consulting firm now reviewing the hospital’s operations.

Hospital executives announced Thursday that David B. Coats, senior vice president of the Hunter Group of St. Petersburg, Fla., had been hired under a two-year contract as the hospital’s chief executive officer.

Coats will also continue as an employee of the Hunter Group, the announcement said.

Hospital officials declined to disclose his salary.

The hospital hired the Hunter Group as a consultant for about $250,000 in December. Frankie Richards, a hospital spokeswoman, said the dual employment is not a conflict of interest, calling it “not uncommon in the industry.”
