SEAL BEACH : Only 5 Candidates File for City Election

Share

Five candidates have filed to run for three council seats and the city clerk post in the March 31 election.

Because only one incumbent is being opposed, the City Council may choose to appoint the other candidates, City Clerk Joanne M. Yeo said.

Incumbent Frank Laszlo, 65, now serving as mayor and representing College Park East, or District 4, is being challenged by Marilyn Spiegel, 56, the owner of a local real-estate company.

George Brown, 67, is running unopposed in Leisure World’s District 2. Councilwoman Edna Wilson, who now represents the district, is not eligible to run because she has served two consecutive terms.

Incumbent William J. Doane, 70, is the only candidate to file for the seat representing Leisure World’s District 5. Doane was appointed by the council to replace Councilman Joe Hunt last year when Hunt resigned and is running for a two-year seat--the second half of Hunt’s four-year term.

Yeo, 56, has served as city clerk since 1980 and is also unopposed.

State law has been modified to allow city councils to appoint candidates who are unopposed. Yeo estimated such appointments will save the city between $12,000 and $15,000.

The council will vote Feb. 10 on whether to hold the election in all districts or just in District 4.
