Airline Fined in Sex Discrimination Case: American Airlines was ordered to pay $7 million for discriminating against a female former executive who claims that she was not considered for promotion to a top management job despite high qualifications. A jury in New York state court added $2.5 million in punitive damages to the $4.5 million American had already been ordered to pay to Barbara Sogg. Sogg, 53, who stopped climbing the corporate ladder after she underwent heart surgery, contends that she was denied promotion based on sex, age and disability. American, based in Ft. Worth, Tex., said it would appeal.
