WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Little-Used Garcia Sparks USC

Share

Julie Garcia made a layup at the buzzer Sunday, giving the USC women a 75-73 road victory at Cal State Sacramento.

Sacramento had tied the score, 73-73, on Teresa Hampton’s layup. USC’s Tammy Story missed the first free throw of a one-and-one situation with 32 seconds to play and then fouled out, sending Tesia Green to the line with 12 seconds to play.

Green missed the foul shot and the rebound went to USC’s Tracy Adams, who brought the ball up the court and fed Garcia for the winning basket.

Garcia, a walk-on for her first three years at USC, had come in when Story fouled out. She scored only two points in the game, giving her four points for the season.

Lisa Leslie led USC (10-5) with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Story had 16 points.

Kristy Ryan had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets (8-12).

Sacramento led by as many as eight (50-42) with 15 minutes left.
