Taiwan Election
In his article, Reisman has a few complimentary things to say about Taiwan, but his negative observations about the National Assembly election in December suggests that his visit was too brief for him to have gained a clear understanding of the will of the people.
The election process was widely praised by international observers as being fair and democratic. The Nationalist (Kuomintang) Party received more than 70% of the vote, a clear mandate for it to proceed with constitutional reforms. The party also stands for the concept of one China--a China that is one day reunited as a fully free and democratic country.
The KMT and the government of the Republic of China are opposed to the notion of an independent Taiwan. Historically, Taiwan has been a part of China for centuries. The Nationalist Party’s election success mirrors many opinion polls. They have consistently shown a strong majority favoring the one-China concept.
