Ignacio Bernal y Garcia Pimentel, 81, anthropologist who studied Mexico’s pre-Columbian civilizations. An expert on the Totonac culture of the Gulf of Mexico, Bernal had served as director of the internationally acclaimed National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City from 1962 to 1976. During that time, he served a two-year term as director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
