A handicapped man was discovered dead of a suspected drug overdose and an unconscious woman who may have been his mother was found lying next to him on the living-room floor in their University City apartment, police said.

The dead man, described as 30 to 35 years old, was discovered Monday in an apartment in the 4600 block of Governor Drive, police said. The woman, described as 60 to 70 years old, was unconscious and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital.

The identities of the man and woman are being withheld until relatives are notified. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the man’s cause of death.

Edward Bourke, a next-door neighbor, said after the woman did not show up for work Monday, a concerned colleague came to check on her at about 9 a.m. Both went to the woman’s apartment, where they found the dead man lying on the floor and the woman lying next to him--unconscious, but still alive.

Bourke said the two had moved into the apartment about six months ago, and he believed they were mother and son.
