The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education has appointed Timothy Carlyle to the five-member board.

Carlyle, 43, replaces board member Kathy Jones, who resigned on Jan. 6 after becoming a vice chancellor at UC Irvine. Her board term was due to expire in November.

Carlyle, a resident of Laguna Beach, was selected from a list of three finalists chosen from an original field of 12 applicants.

“I’m very, very glad that the district has demonstrated this kind of confidence in me,” Carlyle said. “I feel it’s a job that I am well prepared for. I feel that the perspective that I can bring to the board will be a helpful addition.”

Carlyle has been involved in several local activities, including serving on the boards of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Laguna Beach Educational Foundation, the Laguna Beach Little League and the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

He said he already has decided to run to retain his seat on the board in the November election.

“The open seat expedited my plans a bit,” he said. “My expectation is that I will also be running in November. There’s a lot of support for public education in Laguna Beach from parents and the business community, which makes it a pleasure to work on behalf of public education.”

Carlyle is a graduate of UC San Francisco’s Hastings College of Law and works as chief operating officer for a real estate development company in Dana Point. He has two children who attend schools in the Laguna Beach Unified School District.

He will be officially sworn into office at the board’s meeting today.
