NASA ordered the Discovery crew to spend an extra day in space to conduct more experiments. “It’s pretty minimal,” ground controllers told the six men and one woman who have been working in orbit since Jan. 22. Landing was rescheduled for 8:09 a.m. PST Thursday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. A mission spokesman at Cape Canaveral, Fla., said the extension was possible because the crew had conserved power and water. Shuttle flight No. 45 carries crystal-growing experiments and others involving seedlings, roundworms, insects and frog eggs.
