United May Slash Jetliner Purchases: Faced with a record loss for the fourth quarter, UAL Corp.’s United Airlines is expected to announce today that it is cutting back on capital expenditures for new airliners. Kidder Peabody analyst Samuel Buttrick said he believes that United will reduce the purchase of narrow-body jets, specifically on the Boeing Co.’s 737 and 757 delivery program.
