Highland Park : Man Held in 1989 Slaying
A man was arrested last week in a 1989 rape and murder case after detectives tackling a backlog of unsolved slayings turned up new leads, police said.
Los Angeles Police Detective Ron Vega said Margarito G. Martinez, 28, was charged with burglarizing a house in the 5300 block of Monte Vista Street in Highland Park on Aug. 8, 1989, then sexually assaulting and killing Brigita Kreismanis, 43, after she arrived home.
Vega and a partner conducted fresh interviews in the unsolved case this month. He declined to say what specific information led to Martinez’s arrest. Police believe a second person was involved, but no additional arrests had been made early this week, Vega said.
Martinez appeared in Los Angeles Municipal Court on Monday, but his arraignment was postponed until Feb. 3, court officials said. He is being held in Los Angeles County Jail without bail.
