THOUSAND OAKS : Artifacts’ Discovery Briefly Halts Project
The discovery of Chumash artifacts at the site of Thousand Oaks’ Jungleland civic arts plaza brought grading to a temporary halt this week, an Indian official said Wednesday.
Work stopped Tuesday after bulldozers unearthed two grinding stones, a hammer stone and stone flakes on an embankment near the Ventura Freeway, said Richard Angulo, chairman of the California Indian Council Chumash and a monitor on the $63.8-million project.
Grading resumed Wednesday.
The artifacts were found in soil that had been moved from somewhere else, Angulo said. Monitors checked about 50 square feet of soil, but determined that no archeological site had been disturbed.
