Hollywood : Bill Would Target Crime
Taking aim at crime in Hollywood, Senate President Pro Tem David Roberti has introduced a measure that would allow redevelopment funds to be used to reduce gang violence.
Roberti (D-Hollywood) introduced the bill Tuesday in response to requests from Hollywood activists, civic leaders and city officials, who said some of the $922 million earmarked for Hollywood’s revitalization needs to go toward cutting down crime. Last year, crime and gang activity increased sharply.
Roberti said that, if approved, the money could be used to finance efforts against illegal drug trafficking and gang-related violence, mostly by putting more police officers on the streets. Currently, redevelopment money can be used to cure physical blight through such measures as improvements in public facilities, open spaces and water systems, Roberti said.
City Councilman Michael Woo, who represents Hollywood, introduced a measure this week putting the City Council on record in support of Roberti’s bill.
