Background Check for Gun Owners

Share

Undoubtedly the National Rifle Assn. and its financial supporters, the gun manufacturers, will find some strange rationale for opposing the state legislation for background checks on the sale of firearms.

Your editorial indicating that 5,859 guns were kept out of the hands of potential threats to society was very illuminating.

Former Chief Justice Warren Burger, himself a gun owner, said the Second Amendment was the most abused and misused aspect of our Constitution. Legislation that was intended to provide for an armed, regulated militia has been twisted around by the gun lobby to where we now have children carrying guns to school, shop owners packing weapons and drive-by shootings that don’t even make the 20th page of the newspaper anymore.

It may be too late to do anything about the millions of guns out there, but perhaps we should consider regulations on the sale of ammunition. This way NRA members can have all the guns they want, and our streets may be just a little safer.
