Authorities looking for a bank robbery suspect found him in the Ventura County Jail, serving a sentence for petty theft, an FBI spokesman said Friday.
Oscar Cervantes, 26, of Fillmore was arrested on suspicion of bank robbery in connection with a holdup at Great Western Bank in Camarillo on Nov. 12 and one at the City of Commerce Bank in Santa Barbara 10 days later, said Gary Auer, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Ventura office.
Cervantes had begun serving a 3-year, 8-month sentence for petty theft when he was identified as a suspect in the Camarillo robbery. Witnesses identified him from surveillance photos taken during the Santa Barbara robbery, Auer said.
“We found him at the jail, amazingly enough,” Auer said.
No details of the petty theft conviction were available.
Cervantes will be held at the jail until he is taken to U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to face bank robbery charges Feb. 18.
