King Trial to Open Without Live TV
There will be no live television coverage during the opening weeks of the trial of the four police officers charged in the beating of Rodney G. King, a judge in the case ruled Friday.
Judge Stanley M. Weisberg ruled that transmission of the trial cannot be live because of the danger of transmitting privileged attorney-client conversations.
But Weisberg agreed to allow TV stations to obtain a video device that will delay transmission 18 seconds, said Hans Laetz, assignment manager for television station KTLA. The device should be in place by March 4, when opening arguments are scheduled.
Several Los Angeles television stations have arranged to have the video-delay device built especially for the trial, Laetz said.
