* * 1/2 Eliane Elias, “A Long Story,” Blue Note. Nine of the 10 pieces on the pianist-composer’s fifth Blue Note release are originals. Many are richly reflective of her Brazilian heritage, especially “Back in Time” (a choro ) and “Let Me Go,” a South American ballad. This is a carefully structured program, with complex synthesizer arrangements and a few brisk, scat vocals. A limited amount of Elias’ superb piano playing is the album’s only real flaw.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
