Regarding “Ms. Beauty and the Beast,” by Elaine Dutka (Film Clips, Jan. 19):

Congratulations to Calendar for its willingness to buck a Hollywood trend and give recognition and acknowledgment to a screenwriter. Your profile of “Beauty and the Beast” writer Linda Woolverton was a refreshing change of pace from the decades-old practice of ignoring the person who creates the situation, the characters and everything they say and do.

In the era of the auteur , in which the name of the director is placed above the title (“A Joe Doakes Film”), Calendar is willing to remind its readers that motion pictures are created on paper by writers long before they are fully realized on film by directors, actors and a host of other talented contributors.
