Debutante Ball

Times are tough! The economic recession and increasingly effective competitors in the world marketplace have combined to bring new challenges to Americans. Our standard of living is on a Jenny Craig diet, our constitutional rights are as endangered as the Northern spotted owl, and historic American cultural institutions are threatened with extinction.
Doing my little part to keep America great I have decided to designate my United Way contribution to the preservation of the La Jolla Debutante Ball. What could be more tragic than the sight of teary-eyed little rich girls wandering the shops of University Towne Centre, while their distraught society parents struggle to make ends meet by raising rents, legal fees and restaurant prices?
Unemployed ball chairwoman Dona Whitaker said it best: “You can’t blame George (Bush). He’d have been all for what we’re trying to do here.” You bet he would!
