Cancellation of Sumitomo Pact

We were delighted to note that your editorial “What’s Sacred About Driverless?” (Jan. 21) brought out many of the points we have been making over the past year concerning the proposed Green Line from Norwalk to Los Angeles International Airport.

This union, which represents the 5,000 RTD and train operators, went on record nearly a year ago, with both the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission and the Public Utilities Commission, with our concerns over safety aspects of a fully automated system.

Mark Stein’s excellent story on the Vancouver system (Jan. 20) and the sheer folly of using an untested technology that is not compatible with the Blue Line, while costing considerably more, make it obvious that another solution must be found.

When that is added to the need to use public funds, if possible, to create more jobs in Southern California primarily, and the U.S. secondarily, it makes it obvious to LACTC members that they must rethink their approach for future transit needs.
