University of San Diego scored five unearned runs with two out in the sixth inning and scored a 12-6 victory over its alumni. Alumnus Dave Rolls (1988), who’s in the Texas Rangers’ organization, hit two home runs and had five RBIs. Tony Moeder’s triple sparked the Torero sixth.

San Diego State will play its alumni today at 1:30 p.m. at Smith Field. An old timers game begins at 10:30 a.m.

BOWLING

Qualifying leader Jess Stayrook of San Diego lost to Alan Bishop of Louisville, 223-190, in the title game of the $175,000 PBA Quaker State Open at Grand Prairie, Tex. Tied after four frames, Stayrook managed only three strikes in his final seven shots. He won $19,000. Bishop earned his first PBA title and collected $36,000.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SDSU’s Kieishsha Garnes scored 35 points, but the Aztecs dropped an 82-73 Western Athletic Conference game to host Creighton (14-3, 4-1). SDSU (12-6, 4-1) shot 52% from the floor.

USD fell behind early and lost a West Coast Conference game, 96-59, at Santa Clara (12-6, 4-1). USD, playing without injured center Chris Enger, trailed at halftime, 51-33, and never got closer. Lynda Jones led the Toreras (6-11, 1-4) with 15 points. Melissa King scored 23 points.

Rochelle Lightner made 10 of 14 shots and scored 23 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to an 80-47 GSAC victory over Master’s College. Christy Stevens added 15 points for PLNC (15-6, 3-2).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jim Hill made 10 of 13 three-point attempts, scored 32 points and led Christian Heritage to a 79-72 victory over Point Loma Nazarene. Shane McKim added 18 for Christian Heritage (5-16). Rusty Fallin scored 20 and Donnie Buettner 17 for PLNC (10-11).

MEN’S TENNIS

Unranked USD took four singles matches and upset 12th-ranked Cal, 5-2, in Berkeley. USD’s Jose Luis Noriega won a surprisingly easy match against Matt Lucena, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Other singles winners for the Toreros (2-1) were Kevin Bradley, Ignacio Martinez and Phil Hoffman. Frederik Axsater and Mark Huarte clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

SDSU won its season opener, 5-3, over Southern Methodist (2-2) at the University of New Mexico. SDSU’s Joe McDonough defeated Hendrick Jordan, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Kerry Safdie for a doubles victory. Jeff Belloli and Chris Numbers also won two matches. The Aztecs play New Mexico today in a rematch of last year’s Western Athletic Conference championship.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

No. 11 Pepperdine (4-1) outlasted No. 18 USD, 6-3, in a West Coast Conference match. Julie McKeon defeated Kirstin Smith, 6-2, 6-3, and Tracy Ishii downed Natasha Popsich, 6-1, 6-1, for USD’s singles victories. McKeon and Laura Richards won at doubles for the Toreras (0-1).

Singles winners Diane Chandler and Amanda Lynch defeated Marni Matsumoto and Christa Hansen, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the decisive No. 2 doubles match as UC San Diego edged Cal State Fullerton, 5-4, in both teams’ season opener.
