It was no surprise that a game featuring No. 4 Indiana included balanced scoring, team defense and domination at both ends of the court.

The Hoosiers, however, were on the receiving end of the beating Saturday at East Lansing, Mich.

Mike Peplowski scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds as No. 13 Michigan State ended Indiana’s 13-game winning streak with a 76-60 Big Ten Conference victory.

“We were never really a threat today,” Indiana Coach Bobby Knight said. “Their effort and enthusiasm just knocked us out of our sync. They played very well and never let us get into a good offensive flow.

“When any team in this league gets the maximum effort from all its players, they’re tough to beat. That’s what Michigan State got today. We didn’t.”

Michigan State (14-3, 4-3 in the Big Ten) rebounded from a 10-point loss to Michigan on Wednesday night and held Indiana (15-3, 6-1) to 39% shooting--the Hoosiers’ lowest of the season.

Indiana’s lowest previous shooting performance was 42% against Boston University. During the winning streak, 10 Hoosiers shot better than 50%. But no opponent has shot 50% against the Spartans in 29 games, dating to last season.

The Spartans also outrebounded Indiana, 40-24.

No. 1 Duke 100, Notre Dame 71--Christian Laettner scored 29 points at Durham, N.C., and Bobby Hurley surpassed the 1,000-point mark as the Blue Devils won their 500th game in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
