COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Santa Barbara Edges UCI in Men’s Swimming

UC Irvine needed a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay to win Saturday’s Big West Conference men’s swimming and diving meet against UC Santa Barbara at Crawford Hall pool. The Anteaters were credited with the race’s fastest time but were denied the victory.

On the final leg, Irvine’s John Dorsey held a slight lead on Bill Sweeney. Sweeney charged Dorsey in the final 25 yards. The Anteaters were timed in 1 minute 25.09 seconds to Santa Barbara’s 1:25.36, but the head official overruled in the Gauchos’ favor.

With the 128-115 loss, Irvine fell to 6-4, 1-2.

In Big West Conference women’s swimming and diving:

UC Santa Barbara 139, UC Irvine 94--Sophomore Liz Koch broke her school record in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.41) for the host Anteaters (8-5, 1-3).

In nonconference baseball:

UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 2--The bottom of the order provided the power for the Anteaters (2-1) at home. The seventh, eighth and ninth positions drove in and scored all three runs. Tim McDonnell and Dave Dieter, who batted seventh and eight, hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning, and Jon Damush, who batted ninth, drove in the third run with a double in the fourth.

Christ College Irvine 16-8, Whittier College 4-5--Lonny Zimmerman had five hits and drove in six runs as the Eagles (3-0) swept at home.

Jim Vlcek had four hits, scored five funs and drove in three.

Chapman 6-2, St. Mary’s 2-7--Jason White’s single drove in the first of four runs in the seven inning of the first game for the visiting Panthers. St. Mary’s broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run fifth in the second game. Chapman is 2-1. St. Mary’s is 1-2.

In the Miami men’s tennis tournament:

Miami 6, UC Irvine 3--Marco Zuniga won at No. 6 singles and teamed with Brett Hansen-Dent for a victory at No. 1 doubles, but the 21st ranked Anteaters (1-2) fell to the eighth-ranked Hurricanes in a second-round match.

Fred Bach and Chris Tontz defeated Klas Pettersson and Paul Mattson, 6-0, 6-7, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles for Irvine’s other point.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC San Diego 5, Cal State Fullerton 4--Diane Chandler and Amanda Lynch defeated Marni Matsumoto and Christa Hansen, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the decisive No. 2 doubles match as the host Titans lost to the Division III Tritons in the teams’ season opener.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, UC San Diego 0--Leland Quinn had 25 kills as the visiting Anteaters (3-2) kept the Tritons (0-5) winless.
