Irish Official Ends Prime Minister Bid
Finance Minister Bertie Ahern withdrew from the race for prime minister on Sunday and gave his support to front-runner Albert Reynolds.
On Thursday, a successor to resigning Prime Minister Charles Haughey will be chosen by the 77 members representing Haughey’s Fianna Fail Party in Parliament. The winner then must win a majority of votes in Parliament on Feb. 11 to be named prime minister.
Ahern, 40, lost political ground in the conservative, Roman Catholic country after announcing that he and his wife had separated.
