* GTE Corp. said its fourth-quarter profit rose 10% but earnings for all of 1991 fell 8% after a one-time charge connected with the company’s $6.6-billion merger with Contel Corp.

Profit for the quarter was $515 million, or 57 cents a share, compared to $467 million, or 52 cents a share, for the fourth quarter of 1990, GTE said.

The increase was due largely to improvements in telephone operations and mobile communications, said James L. Johnson, GTE’s chairman and chief executive.

Revenue totaled $5.2 billion, up 7% from the $4.9 billion in the same quarter of 1990.

For the year, net income was $1.6 billion, or $1.75 a share, compared to $1.7 billion, or $1.93 a share in 1990, after adjusting for a one-time net charge of $204 million for the Contel merger.

Before the charge, net income was $1.8 billion, or $1.98 a share, for the year, 7% higher than the $1.85 earned on a pro-forma basis in 1990.

Revenue totaled $19.6 billion, compared to $19.2 billion for 1990.

GTE, the nation’s second-largest cellular telephone operator, said cellular revenue reached $765 million in 1991, 30% higher than 1990.
