La Canada Flintridge : Vote on Waste Plan Put Off

Share

The City Council has postponed a decision on joining other cities in a state-mandated program to improve the collection, recycling, treatment and disposal of hazardous household waste.

After no one showed up to speak during a hearing Monday, the council continued the hearing to March 16 to give residents another chance.

The measure supports an increase in drop-off days for unwanted chemical products--such as pesticides, paint, turpentine, motor oil and lighter fluid--at sites throughout the county.

Improvements to the program, co-sponsored locally by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and Department of Public Works, would not require an increase in the city’s current hazardous waste recycling surcharge of 56 cents per ton of waste carted away to area landfills, said City Manager Gabrielle Pryor.

The county would absorb any new costs.
