The ‘Lone Ranger’ Tosses Hat In Ring
Incumbent La Canada Flintridge City Councilman Chris Valente, a self-described “lone ranger,” announced last week that he will run for reelection, despite his ongoing frustration with the majority on the five-member council.
Valente, 48, said he decided to seek a second term because only two other candidates--Carol Liu and David Spence--have announced that they are running.
Two seats, each with a four-year term, will be filled in the April 14 election. Incumbent Ed Phelps, who was elected four years ago, decided not to seek another term. The deadline to file for candidacy is Feb. 11.
Valente, who was rebuffed in a bid to become mayor during his first term, said most of the council members have been unreceptive to his ideas, including a proposal to allow the use of household drain water for garden irrigation. But Valente said he concluded that it was important to have competitive elections for the council seats and that he ought to run again.
