FULLERTON : City Cracks Down on Wheeled Nuisances

Share

The City Council voted to prohibit skateboarding, roller skating and bicycling in the city’s three parking garages after complaints that riders disrupt traffic and collide with pedestrians.

Drivers who use the garages have complained that skateboarders have become a nuisance and hazard as they jump off curbs, glide down ramps and hop over barriers.

Security officers at Fullerton College’s new parking garage said it has been increasingly frequented by skateboarders since the facility opened about a year ago. It is owned by the city but operated by the college.

“They come from as far away as the (San Fernando) Valley and Costa Mesa,” said John Maw, college director of security. “Some of them come by bus. . . . I don’t know why they come here. I guess because it’s new.”

Maw said pedestrians and cars have collided, and curbs and walls have been chipped and punctured.

“They are there quite regularly,” he said. “They’re just going in there and vandalizing and tearing it up. . . . It’s unsafe.”
